Carey Newman proved a strongly active participant at the four “summits” that I cochaired in New York: on the resurrection (1996), the Trinity (1998), the incarnation (2000), and the redemption (2003). Oxford University Press published the proceedings of all four symposia, which brought together an ecumenical and interdisciplinary team of scholars from the United States, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere.

Since those golden days in New York, Carey has become the editor of Baylor University Press, and I finished thirty-two years of teaching at the Gregorian University (Rome) and returned to live in Australia (from 2009). Carey noticed that I was continuing to publish articles in the area of Christology (Who is Christ in himself?), which also necessarily involves work in soteriology (What has Christ done for us?). He invited me to gather together and publish eight recent articles. I hope that they can advance reflection on and spark insights into the heart of Christian faith: the person and “work” of Jesus Christ.

This book appears on the occasion of the fifty-year celebration of the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). Called by Pope John XXIII of blessed memory, the Council gave a great impetus toward the unity of Christians. In its own small way, may Christology: Origins, Developments, Debates help believers everywhere toward appreciating and following the One at the heart of the ecumenical movement, our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Three general chapters (about Christology and soteriology) will be followed by two essays in the area of resurrection studies (“Paul as a Witness to the Risen Jesus” and “Peter as Witness to Easter”) and an essay on the eternal priesthood of Christ. As its title indicates, “The Priesthood of Christ and Followers of Other Faiths” extends our focus to include also “the theology of religions.”
